Huonville is the biggest town in the southern part of Tasmania. Huonville flanks the Huon River 40km south of Hobart, not far from some lovely vineyards, cider-makers and small villages. Having made its name as Tasmania’s apple-growing powerhouse, it remains a functional, working town – low on charm but with all the services you need. Nearby Ranelagh is an agricultural hub with a couple of stellar foodie stops.
The Huon Hwy traces the Huon River south, passing the settlements of Franklin and Port Huon, Geeveston, Dover and South Port. These were historical shipping ports for apples, but nowadays the old wharves and packing sheds are now the hub of the salmo farming industry. Strung-out, boatie-central Franklin is the oldest town in the Huon Valley, and the wide, shallow, reedy riverscape here is one of Australia’s best rowing courses.
